Ortho Implants & Airport Security

Do ortho implants beep on airport scanners?

Yes, they can. Airport scanners are designed to detect metal, and ortho implants are usually made of metal. The most common ones are made of stainless steel, titanium, or cobalt chrome. These metals are all good conductors of electricity, which is what the scanners detect.

The sensitivity of scanners varies, but most will pick up ortho implants. Some small ones, like screws or staples, may not set off the alarm though.

If your implant does beep, you'll be sent to secondary screening. This may involve a pat-down or a full-body scan. You may also be asked to show proof of your implant, like a medical alert card or a letter from your doctor.

Here are some tips for traveling with ortho implants:

Get to the airport early to give yourself extra time for screening.

Let the TSA officer know you have an implant.

Bring a medical alert card or a letter from your doctor that describes your implant.

Be prepared to take off your shoes and belt, and empty your pockets.

If you're asked for a pat-down, ask the TSA officer to use the back of their hand to search over your implant.

If you have any concerns, talk to a supervisor.

Don't worry, airport scanners are safe for people with ortho implants. They don't use any harmful radiation.

Sun Exposure Guidelines: Finding The Right Balance for Good Skin and Strong Bones

Sun Exposure Guidelines for Vitamin D: Balancing Skin Care vs Strong Bones Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, essential for bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. This is why the Orthopaedic Surgeons ask people to get adequate exposure. However, excessive sun exposure can damage the skin, cause wrinkles, burns and even increase the risk of skin cancer. This is what the Dermatologists caution us about. So, how much sun is actually enough for vitamin D production, and how can you do it safely? Here's a breakdown of factors to consider: Skin Type: Fairer skin burns more easily and requires less sun exposure for vitamin D synthesis. People with darker skin tones may need slightly longer exposure times. Season and Location: Sun intensity varies depending on latitude, time of day, and cloud cover. Generally, midday sun in spring, summer, and early fall provides the strongest UVB rays for vitamin D production. Individual Needs: Factors like...
